Extinction Atlas

2026 | Interactive atlas | Biodiversity and shared threats

An atlas of threatened and extinct species, held in a world map, a globe and an archive of cards: habitats, threats, conservation status.

Drag to pan the world map or rotate the globe; use the wheel or two fingers to zoom. Select a species to open its card. Map, Globe and Cards preserve filters and selection. Search by name, place or habitat, filter by conservation status, group and threat, or follow one of four tours. Connections show shared threats. The interactive system is in Italian.

Extinction Atlas explores an editorial sample of 60 species through three views of the same dataset: an Equal Earth world map, an orthographic globe and a card archive. The selection includes mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates, with distinct conservation categories, including extinct species and species extinct in the wild.

Each card brings together names, places, habitats, population figures with their year and scope, threats, assessment history and sources. Colour and symbols identify conservation status and taxonomic group; connections between species show shared threats. These connections help readers explore the sample; they do not describe biological relationships or causal weights.

The sample does not represent global biodiversity as a whole. Coordinates are representative and scientific verification is partial: sources support the individual fields indicated, without automatically validating an entire record. The data retain their limitations and provenance so that exploration comes with the context needed to interpret them.
